Each week, we offer the opportunity to stay connected with the roots of Christianity, together.

Vespers with Rooted

What is Vespers?

Vespers is an ancient prayer and worship service that dates at least as far back as the 4th century. Although it takes place around sunset, Vespers is the first service of a new day and takes us through creation, sin, and salvation in Jesus Christ. We are led to meditate on the Scriptures and are reminded of God’s love for us. In the Vespers service, we also highlight the first Christian, Mary the mother of Jesus (also called the Theotokos, which means “God-bearer” in Greek). Christians have turned to the Theotokos for nearly 2,000 years, asking for her prayers to her Son on our behalf.

Christianity has deep roots, and those roots can help us to weather the storms life brings.  Ancient services of the church like Vespers are gifts that connect us to those deep roots.  We hope you can join us on your campus for one of these services!

All are welcome.

You don’t have to have any experience with Christianity or the Church to participate in a Vespers service. Come as you are; expect to an opportunity to connect with Christ.

Click on the audio clips below to familiarize yourself with the prayers that you will hear at Vespers.

While no experience is necessary, we know you like to be prepared. We’ve made a way for you to know what to expect!

Wait, is the service in a different language?

If you listened to the audio clips, you may have noticed that alongside English, some of the service is in Greek. While most of the service is in English, Greek is the language that the New Testament was written in and is still used in Christian worship services today to maintain a connection with the church’s Biblical, historical, and cultural roots.

Each campus has access to a Vespers service. We invite you to come! Choose your campus below to find details about a service near you.

But wait, I have more questions!

We want to connect. Reach out here — we look forward to it!
