Icon is of our patron saint, Andrew the First Called.

In the first centuries of Christianity, the Church identified certain churches, people, and eventually ministries with Christians who had lived such holy lives they were given the title “Saint.” While all Christians are called to be saints, the “holy ones” of God, the Church has always seen those who exemplified a devotion to Christ as a capital ‘S’ Saint, hold the confidence that they are in the Kingdom of God, who, in the words of Christ, is a God of the living and not of the dead (Luke 20:38). In keeping with this early Church practice, Rooted’s patron saint is one of the Twelve, Saint Andrew the First-Called Apostle.

Saint Andrew became an obvious choice for two reasons. First, Andrew is the one who invited Peter to encounter Christ. At Rooted, we want college students to be invitational, inviting their fellow students to meet Christ (John 1:41). Second, when Jesus stood on the bank of the Sea of Galilee, he transformed the vocation of Andrew the Fishermen into Andrew who would be a Fisher of Men (Matthew 4:19). We want the students who are a part of Rooted to have their vocation transformed through their calling by Christ.

Why an icon? As you may know, icons have been an essential part of Christian worship from the time of the Apostles to today, as the physical world, transformed by Christ through His incarnation, gives us a “window into the Kingdom.” We’ve collaborated with Steve because of his generosity and we see artistry as absolutely exceptional. We are so pleased to present to you this icon for sale in the store!
